The Exceptional Journey

Hello, my name is Yolanda Murphy and I am a breast cancer survivor!

In 2016, at the age of 36 I was diagnosed with stage 2b breast cancer after finding a lump in my breast one evening while at home. It rocked my world and changed my life forever. I had a lumpectomy, 4 rounds of chemotherapy and 30 radiation treatments. After breast cancer, life is not what it used to be. We have all heard of the "new normal" when it comes to life after a diagnosis, I take everyday in stride knowing I really am learning myself all over again. I have learned to have patience with myself and realize I am not the woman I used to be. My body, my mind and even relationships with others is something I have to relearn.

Having to face breast cancer before 40 was a daunting and often a lonely experience that no woman should have to face alone. Once I finished active treatment I knew I wanted to give back and help other woman who would face what I had just gone through. I connected with several amazing organisations to get my advocate efforts underway. I recently completed my active year as a young advocate with Living Beyond Breast Cancer, I am currently a Pennsylvania State Leader with Young Survival Coalition and recently became a 2018 Project LEAD graduate with the National Breast Cancer Coalition.

Once I was connected with organizations and some awesome people, I found the strength in my own story and wanted a space for women like me to have a voice and place where they can see someone who has been where they are. Out of this desire, I created "This Exceptional Journey", which started as just a blog and is now expanded to a podcast and YouTube channel. These will be spaces where woman can see and hear from someone they can relate to as they walk the journey with breast cancer. A place woman can be themselves and thrive just as awesome as they are after a cancer diagnosis. I want women to know if I can make it after diagnosis, so can they!
